Igor Girkin, Asshole of the Day for July 21, 2014
by TeaPartyCat (Follow @TeaPartyCat)
A lot has been learned since Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was shot down last week, including that people like Allen West can find a way to blame Obama for a plane being shot down on Russia’s border by Ukraine separatists encouraged and armed by Vladimir Putin, and do it with a straight face.
And as it became clear that the plane was shot down by the Putin-armed rebels, the rebel leader Igor Girkin claimed a bizarre defense:

A top pro-Russia rebel commander in eastern Ukraine has given a bizarre version of events surrounding the Malaysian jetliner crash — suggesting many of the victims may have died days before the plane took off.
The pro-rebel website Russkaya Vesna on Friday quoted Igor Girkin as saying he was told by people at the crash site that “a significant number of the bodies weren’t fresh,” adding that he was told they were drained of blood and reeked of decomposition.

So you see, you shouldn’t blame him for shooting it out of the sky— those people were already dead. That’s what he’s saying.
Of course this raises some questions:
How exactly did he know they were already dead?
Is he suggesting that shooting a civilian plane down is now OK because it turns out they were already dead?
Seems to me that shooting down civilian passenger planes is still NOT OK, and that there were still civilian pilots and such. It wasn’t a plane flying on autopilot with no living passengers. If he didn’t know the plane was full of corpses, then it still doesn’t absolve him of shooting down a plane he thought was full of people.
And, yes, I know he is probably Putin’s puppet, or at least Putin is his enabler. Putin may have given him the surface-to-air missiles he used to shoot it down, but I don’t think Putin told him to make up this cockamamie story about a plane full of corpses. That was him. And for that, Igor Girkin is Asshole of the Day.
It is Igor Girkin’s first time as Asshole of the Day.
